Today we’ll take a look at two American classics, the Chevy Malibu and the Chevy Impala. Both of these sedans have left an indelible mark on automotive history. Our friends at Autobytel pit these two against one another to see which fared better, so here’s our summary to break it down for you.
Pricing
The Impala and Malibu are commonly compared to another and indeed share similar features, but when Autobytel puts them under a microscope, the differences are evident. The first difference that jumps out to most shoppers is the price tag. The 2019 Chevy Malibu has a substantially lower base MSRP at $22,965 versus the $28,895 for the 2019 Impala. Of course, the extra costs of the Impala will put you in an LS trim with more features than the Malibu, but is it worth the extra dough? Let’s take a peek inside and see what features both have to offer.
Features
Regardless of your decision, you’ll have an impressive list of premium features to choose from. The options packages for both vehicles include remote start, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, rear side window manual sunshades, and a nine-speaker Bose audio system. Only the Impala has the option of upgrading to the Bose CenterPoint surround-sound audio system. Where the Malibu stands out is in standard technology features. Every Malibu, regardless of the trim level, has the same tech setup powered by Chevy’s Infotainment 3 system operated on the 8-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto, and a 4G LTE WIFI hotspot come standard on both sedans!
Power & Performance
The Chevrolet Malibu has a standard 160-horsepower turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood. For improved performance, upgrade to the 2.0-liter, and increase your horsepower to 250. The base model Impala carries a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with the option to step up into a 305 horsepower 3.6-literV6. Due to the smaller four-cylinder, the Chevrolet Malibu has a better-combined fuel economy than the Impala, but it certainly lacks the “get up and go.”
